Gunnar Stubseid in born 23. of Januar 1948 in Setesdal, a valley north of Kristiansand, in the Southern part of Norway. This area is famous for the rich folk music traditions. He has played the Hardanger fiddle since the age of 15. He has learnd from most of the older fiddlers i Setesdal, and has participated i several competitions and various conserts in Norway and other countries: Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, England, Italy, Ireland, China and The Philippines. Previously he played in the Slinkombas and Setesdalarna folk music groups, but in the last 15 years he had played together with the Swedish mandola-player Ale Møller. He has made numerous recordings both as a solist and as a studio musician.

Educated as a music teacher, he has also taken a M.A. degree in Ethnology at the University of Bergen. He is now headmaster at the Ole Bull Akademy in Voss.

Gunnar Stubseid has written artickles and books about folk music, and as a teacher at various courses and lectures he has introduced many people to the distinctive folk music from Setesdal and Norway.

He has received Spellmannsprisen (national music award), the Ole Bull Medal and the Bygland cultural award.
